Schools as Places of Empowerment

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

This widely quoted statement by Nelson Mandela highlights the immense importance of schools as places of personal and social transformation.

But what does it really mean to create schools that empower young people – enabling them, strengthening their confidence and giving them the opportunity to reach their full potential?

Schools Should Create Opportunities, Not Deny Them

Our schools should be safe havens where talents are discovered, abilities are nurtured and self-confidence is developed.

Yet the reality often looks very different:

  • Teacher shortages lead to cancelled lessons, disproportionately affecting pupils who depend on a stable and consistent learning environment.

  • Prejudice and social inequality limit opportunities for children from disadvantaged families or migrant backgrounds. Instead of recognising their diversity as an asset, they are often placed into restrictive categories.

  • A lack of individual support means that pupils do not receive the guidance they need to discover and develop their strengths.

It is unacceptable that education can no longer be taken for granted as a pathway to social mobility and self-determination.

When schools fail to fulfil their role as creators of opportunity, we lose not only individual talents but also the chance to advance society as a whole.

Empowerment Through Reform: A New Vision for Schools

A fresh start in education policy is urgently needed.

Schools must become places that offer young people more than knowledge alone. They must strengthen, motivate and empower them to find their own paths.

1. Schools as Places of Personal Development

Instead of relying on rigid curricula, we should give schools the flexibility to respond to the needs of their pupils.

Talent development, creative projects and practical learning approaches should take centre stage.

Every school should be a place where children can discover and develop their individual abilities.

2. Teachers as Creators of Opportunity

Teachers must be empowered to become more than providers of knowledge.

They should inspire, motivate and nurture their pupils.

To achieve this, they need not only better working conditions but also opportunities for professional development that prepare them for the challenges of teaching diverse groups of children.

3. Inclusion and Diversity as Strengths

In a city like Berlin, shaped by cultural diversity, schools should celebrate the different backgrounds of their pupils and recognise them as valuable resources.

This also means removing barriers through language support, intercultural education and targeted assistance for children from socially disadvantaged families.

4. Individual Support Instead of One-Size-Fits-All Thinking

A school placement recommendation should never become a verdict on a child's future.

Instead, we should place greater emphasis on individual guidance.

Mentoring programmes, additional educational support and free tutoring could help create more equal opportunities.

Investing in the Future: Classroom Learning and Digital Education

The pandemic demonstrated how important learning together in the classroom is, particularly for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

At the same time, we must not overlook the opportunities offered by digitalisation.

Modern teaching methods that incorporate digital tools can create new ways to respond to pupils' individual learning needs.

But education is about more than technology.

It is about human connection, exchanging ideas and developing knowledge together.

Face-to-face teaching remains essential for providing personal guidance and individual support.

Working Together for Fairer Education

Education policy is not the responsibility of any one individual.

It requires collective action from policymakers, schools, parents and society as a whole.

A liberal approach to education focuses on the strengths of each individual and creates the conditions in which those strengths can flourish.

"Because schools are overwhelmed..." must no longer serve as an excuse.

Instead, we should say: "Because schools have the power to empower!"

Every talent that is recognised and nurtured benefits not only the individual but society as a whole.

It is time to restore education to what it should be: the foundation of equal opportunities, social mobility and a stronger future.
